Believe it or not - many people aren't motivated by money first and foremost. From my experience living abroad there was very little middle ground in the ex-pat community. You either loved it or hated it. A good percentage of the latter ended up becoming serious alcoholics before they took the flight home (often worse off financially than when they arrived, as well).
